EMVCo Forms Task Force for EV Open Payments
EMVCo, the global technical body that facilitates worldwide interoperability and acceptance
of secure payment transactions, recently announced the formation of a new task force dedicated
to Electric Vehicle (EV) Open Payments. This initiative aims to address the growing demand for
seamless payment experiences across various electric vehicle charging networks.
With the rise in electric vehicle adoption, both consumers and industry players have recognized
the need for standardized and convenient payment methods at charging stations. Many different
charging networks currently exist, each with its own proprietary payment methods or access cards.
This fragmentation creates inconvenience for EV drivers who may need to carry multiple cards or
use different mobile payment applications, adding complexity to the charging process.
The new EMVCo task force will bring together global industry leaders, including automakers,
charging network operators, payment providers, and other relevant stakeholders. Its main
objective is to develop a set of globally interoperable standards for EV Open Payments. The
adoption of these standards by the industry will simplify the user experience and broaden the
availability of EV charging infrastructure.
Bruce Rutherford, Chair of EMVCo’s Executive Committee, said, “As the adoption of electric vehicles
continues to accelerate, ensuring a consistent and user-friendly payment experience is paramount.
By establishing this task force, EMVCo aims to provide the industry with a framework that promotes
seamless and secure payments for EV charging, ultimately driving global interoperability.”
The task force will focus on key areas, including defining global payment acceptance requirements,
developing guidelines for implementing secure payments, and establishing a certification process
for EV charging infrastructure. By collaborating across the industry, the members aim to harmonize
payment methods, enhance payment security, and facilitate market competition.
EMVCo invites interested stakeholders to participate in the task force and contribute their expertise
to shape the future of EV Open Payments. The organization emphasizes the importance of collaboration
and the involvement of all relevant parties to ensure the successful development and implementation
of the standards.
